The Rajas of Bhawal came from the village of Bajrayogini under Munshiganj. They ruled Bhawal until the abolition of the zamindari system in 1951.
After the earthquake in 1897, Raj Bilash and some other parts were rebuilt. At present the different parts are used for different purposes such as Krpamayi's House (as Treasury), the manager Office at the east of the palace (now Joydebpur Government Girls' High School), the Deowankhana at the west (as Queen bilasamani Government High School). The Khasmohal (Demesne) at west side of Rajadighi ( royal lake) was Dr. Ashu Babu's house. In 1978, Bhawal Rajbari was declared a district council building .
